FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE NAIC WELCOMES INTERNATIONAL INTERNS KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 31, 2006) — The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) welcomed 10 interns from Brazil, the British Virgin Islands, China, Korea and Russia to its International Internship Program for Education and Regulatory Cooperation today at the NAIC Executive Headquarters. After the success of the Intern-Pilot Program in 2004, the NAIC developed a formal International Internship Program last year to advance working relations with foreign markets, emphasising the exchange of regulatory techniques and technology. “This program is an excellent opportunity for the NAIC to share its regulatory expertise with the insurance community on an international scale,” NAIC President and Maine Insurance Superintendent Alessandro Iuppa said. “With the expansion of insurance coverage internationally, it is imperative that regulators from all points of the globe combine their knowledge and practices to provide a competitive insurance marketplace, one that offers solid financial solvency and strong consumer protection measures.” The interns will participate in a four-day orientation program in Kansas City, Mo., focusing on the broad principles of insurance regulation in the United States. Each intern then will travel to a different state for five weeks, working in technical areas of their specialization under the supervision of a state insurance department staff member, who will serve as a mentor and host. The program also will include attendance at the 2006 NAIC Winter National Meeting in San Antonio. The internship program will conclude in Washington, D.C., with a debriefing program, a seminar with industry representatives and a certificate ceremony to highlight the interns’ accomplishments. The NAIC internship program is conducted twice a year in the fall and spring.
