PUERTO RICO PRESENTED WITH NAIC’S FIRST ESPRIT DE CORPS AWARD
Honor Recognizes Department’s Unselfish Work in Translating NAIC Consumer Alerts, Insure U Web Site

SAN ANTONIO (Dec. 10, 2006) The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) bestowed its first Esprit de Corps Award to the Puerto Rico Department of Insurance (Puerto Rico DOI) today during the Association’s Winter National Meeting in San Antonio.

Puerto Rico Insurance Commissioner Dorelisse Juarbe Jimenez accepted the award, which was presented by NAIC President and Maine Insurance Superintendent Alessandro Iuppa.

It is an honor to recognize the Puerto Rico Department of Insurance for their continuous service to the NAIC,” Iuppa said during the award presentation. “Commissioner Jimenez and her hard-working department have provided a very generous, consumer-supportive and money-saving service throughout the year.”

For the past year, the Puerto Rico DOI has translated monthly NAIC consumer alerts into the Spanish language, and the department recently translated the entire Insure U Web site, a process that would have cost thousands of dollars to outsource.

“We have heard from many appreciative states that are taking advantage of this service by offering these important consumer tips to their Hispanic communities – all made possible by the Puerto Rico DOI and its unselfish efforts,” Iuppa said. “On behalf of the NAIC, I want to thank them for this creative and valuable sharing of resources.”

The Esprit de Corps Award was established by the NAIC leadership in 2006 to recognize outstanding service to the NAIC and the demonstration of a spirit of cooperation with its members. The name of the award was chosen because “Esprit de Corps” is defined as “a common spirit of comradeship, enthusiasm and devotion to a cause among the members of a group.”
