INTERNATIONAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
KICKS OFF IN KANSAS CITY

Ten Interns from Four Countries Participating in Seven-Week Program

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Oct. 23, 2007)The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) this week welcomed 10 interns from Bulgaria, China, Egypt and Lebanon to the NAIC Executive Headquarters for its fall 2007 International Internship Program.

The seven-week program — which is conducted twice a year — includes a week in Kansas City for orientation and five weeks in a host state for more specialized training. Host states for the fall 2007 program include California, Georgia, Hawaii, New York, North Carolina, Montana and Ohio. The program concludes with attendance at the NAIC Winter National Meeting in Houston, Dec. 2 - 4, followed by closing ceremonies in Washington, D.C., Dec. 5 - 7.

“International cooperation and collaboration continue to be critical components of the NAIC’s overall goals, as we work to help raise the level of insurance expertise worldwide,” said NAIC President and Alabama Insurance Commissioner Walter Bell, who also serves as vice chair of the International Association of Insurance Supervisors (IAIS) Executive Committee. “Through my work at the IAIS, I have found that it is increasingly worthwhile for insurance regulators to maintain a continuous dialogue and learn from one another through programs like this.”

The NAIC developed the International Internship Program in 2004 to advance working relations with foreign markets, emphasizing the exchange of regulatory techniques and technology. Since the program’s inception, 39 interns from 13 countries have fully completed the training. To date, the following jurisdictions have hosted international regulators as part of the NAIC’s intern program: Arkansas, California, District of Columbia, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Montana, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania and Texas.
