FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MENTAL HEALTH FOCUS ORLANDO, Fla. (March 29, 2008) — The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has selected the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Florida as the official charity for its 2008 Spring National Meeting. This selection kicks off the NAIC’s year-long charitable initiative to support organizations that help those whose lives are touched by mental illness. “As a public official for more than two decades, I’ve seen what can happen to people, to healthcare, to tax dollars, to society and to quality of life when the mentally ill do not have access to appropriate care,” said NAIC President and Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger. “Mental illness affects one in five families in America. Organizations like NAMI Florida help bridge the gap between misunderstanding and compassion.” Based in Tallahassee, NAMI Florida is a non-profit organization that works in conjunction with the other NAMI chapters across the nation — more than 1,100 chapters in all. NAMI Florida strives to eradicate the stigmas and stereotypes commonly attributed to mental illness. It offers support groups and educational sessions, in raises money for research and treatment.
