KANSAS CITY, Mo. (April 12, 2010) — The National
Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) welcomed 15 interns
from Botswana, Czech Republic, Egypt, India, Saudi Arabia and
Thailand to its International Internship Program for Education and
Regulatory Cooperation today at the NAIC Central Office.
Now in its seventh year, the NAIC’s International Internship
Program has sought to advance working relations with foreign
markets, emphasizing the exchange of regulatory techniques and
technology.
“This program is an important opportunity for the
NAIC to share its regulatory experience with the international
insurance community,” said Jane L. Cline, NAIC President and West
Virginia Insurance Commissioner. “International cooperation and
collaboration are key components of our commitment to promoting a
competitive marketplace with strong consumer protection measures in
a globalizing industry.”
The interns will participate in a five-day orientation program in
Kansas City, focusing on the broad principles of insurance
regulation in the United States. Each intern will then travel to a
different state for six weeks, working in technical areas of their
specialization under the supervision of a state insurance department
staff member, who will serve as a mentor.
Host jurisdictions
for the spring 2010 program include Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Maryland,
Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Nebraska, New Hampshire,
North Carolina, Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C. and West Virginia.
