NAIC RESPONDS TO PREMERA BREACH
WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 17, 2015) — The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) announced plans for coordinating an action plan in response to today's announcement of the security breach at Premera Blue Cross led by Washington Insurance Commissioner Mike Kreidler. It is estimated that 11 million consumers may be impacted by this cyberattack.
"Events like this underscore the need for consumers to take immediate and ongoing action to protect personal information like passwords to bank accounts, credit card companies, health insurance accounts and any electronic database that contains sensitive, personal information," said NAIC President and Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance Monica J. Lindeen. "Unfortunately sophisticated hacks are a threat to nearly every segment of our population, as we've witnessed with Sony, Target, Home Depot and Anthem, Inc. in the past few months."
"We urge insurance consumers to change passwords, check credit reports and carefully monitor all accounts that may contain sensitive information. State regulators are closely monitoring this attack, as well as the recent breach at Anthem, Inc."

The NAIC Cybersecurity (EX) Task Force will monitor these efforts, update best practices and coordinate NAIC activity.
