Using NAIC/NIPR Web sites and Secure Applications

NAIC Help Desk Support
The NAIC Help Desk provides support for all users of NAIC/NIPR Web sites and secure applications and systems.  However, we may be limited to the recommendations and requirements listed below when attempting to reproduce any issues reported.  We may also be limited in our ability to support Beta or Release Candidate browser software.

NAIC/NIPR Web Sites
The NAIC/NIPR does not endorse or require the use of any specific internet browser.   However, the Web sites are tested for reliability and compatibility using Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 6 and 7) and Mozilla Firefox (versions 2.x and 3.x).  Using these browsers will ensure that Web site content is delivered as intended.

Other browser versions and OS platforms may have received some testing and are not excluded as options for viewing the Web sites but have not been thoroughly evaluated for compatibility—using them may yield unintended viewing results.

Browser Settings
Regardless of which browser or operating system is used, JavaScript and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) should be enabled for the best results.  These features add improved usability, and help to organize the content in an accessible manner.

Section 508 Guidance
The NAIC/NIPR works to maintain Web sites that are accessible to all individuals—with or without disabilities. While the NAIC is not subject to Section 508 Amendment to the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, we use it to guide page design on NAIC/NIPR Web sites.

If you have difficulty accessing information on the NAIC/NIPR Web sites, please contact webpost@naic.org and provide your contact information, the URL (web address) of the content you are trying to access and the problem you are experiencing.  We will attempt to provide the information you're seeking as well as amend the problem.

External Links
Be aware that links to information created and maintained by other public and/or private organizations are used throughout the NAIC/NIPR Web sites. The NAIC/NIPR provides these links for your convenience but can not guarantee the accuracy of content or security of these sites. When you select a link to an outside Web site, you are leaving the NAIC/NIPR Web sites and are subject to the privacy and security policies of the linked Web site.

Other File formats
Different file types are present on the NAIC/NIPR Web sites that may require third-party software to open.  Below is a list of the file types and the third-party software titles used to open them.  While most of these file types are proprietary, there are various commercial, freeware, and shareware applications which may be used to read or open these file types.

  • .pdf – Adobe Acrobat Reader version 5.x or higher
  • .doc – Microsoft Word
  • .mdb – Microsoft Access
  • .ppt – Microsoft Power Point
  • .xls – Microsoft Excel
  • .zip – Microsoft WinZip
  • .mp3 –There are many commercial, freeware and shareware options.
  • .swf – Adobe Flash Player

NAIC/NIPR Secure Applications
NAIC/NIPR secure applications and systems perform optimally under the following conditions:

Operating System Recommendations
NAIC/NIPR secure applications and systems have been written and tested against Microsoft Windows operating systems. The versions tested are Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Minimum System Requirements
Pentium Pro 200Mhz PC
128 Megabytes of memory

Screen Resolution
All NAIC/NIPR applications and web pages are designed for a minimum screen resolution of 800 by 600 pixels.

Adobe Acrobat Reader Requirements
Reader version 5 or greater is recommending for viewing PDF documents.

Secure Browser Recommendations
Microsoft Internet Explorer
Firefox

Recommended Browsers for NAIC/NIPR Secure Applications
NAIC/NIPR developed applications and systems have been developed and tested using the browsers listed in the "Secure Browser Recommendations" section above.

Most NAIC/NIPR applications are written using JavaScript 1.2 or higher and use cookies; consequently, these applications perform optimally with browsers configured as follows:

  • JavaScript 1.2 or higher enabled
  • Cookies accepted
  • Pop-up blockers disabled (many NAIC/NIPR applications use popup windows and require popup blockers to allow popup windows to be displayed)
  • SSL 2.0 enabled

Most NAIC/NIPR applications perform optimally under Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 and version 7, and under the two most current major versions of Firefox (i.e., 3.x and 2.x).

Some NAIC/NIPR applications may not support all of the recommended browsers due to special application needs and/or possible software issues in browsers. The State Based Systems (SBS) application must use version 6 or version 5 of Microsoft Internet Explorer.

While the Help Desk is prepared to answer your technical support questions, the analysts may not be familiar with all state-specific regulations, policies or claims. If you have questions about any of these matters, please contact your insurance agent or your state insurance department.
