The Government Relations Leadership Council met June 15, 2009.
During this meeting, the Council:
- Received a presentation from Glenn Pomeroy of the California Earthquake Authority (CEA) on a natural catastrophe proposal that would allow the federal government to guarantee the obligations of state funds, such as the CEA. The proposal has been introduced in the House of Representatives by Rep. Ron Klein (D-FL).
- Received an update from NAIC staff on the federal privacy model form. Ethan Sonnichsen (NAIC) discussed the status of the effort by several federal agencies to develop a common privacy notice form. In order to use the form for a variety of financial institutions, it is being developed with a menu of terms that a company can use to tailor the form to its products while still retaining a consistent look and feel across the financial sector.
- Received an update on federal activity from NAIC staff. Mr. Sonnichsen discussed the debate under way in Washington on broad regulatory reform, including proposals for a federal insurance regulator, systemic risk regulator, resolution authority, and financial products safety regulation.
- Received an update from NAIC staff on health reform discussions in Washington, including the competing bills under development in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
