Summer 2009 Meeting Summaries Index

The Consumer Liaison Committee met June 13, 2009.

During this meeting, the Committee:

  • Received a presentation on current health care and health insurance issues. Discussion focused on the differences between the federal option and the private insurance system, as well as the possibility that the two versions could work in conjunction with one another by taking the best practices from each to develop one new public health care system.
  • Received presentations on credit scoring/risk classification. Discussion focused on the April 30 hearing regarding key issues, such as the pricing and selection of policyholders using credit scoring. It was recommended that the NAIC adopt a moratorium on credit scoring while the practice is being investigated and until corrective legislation is enacted.
  • Received presentations on the proposed national catastrophe policy. Presentations focused on the increase in consumer costs in the form of rates and deductibles, with an emphasis on the combination wind/water claims following hurricanes and fire/water claims following wildfires.
  • Received a presentation on the federal privacy notice form model. This presentation focused on the importance of the NAIC’s role in providing comments to federal agencies in response to their draft form.
  • Received a presentation on the Market Conduct Annual Statement. This presentation focused on current efforts of consumer-advocacy groups to work with the NAIC to separate the public vs. confidential issue from the collection of data, while keeping data that is essential to market analysis available for consumers.
