Winter 2009 Meeting Summaries Index

The NAIC/Consumer Liaison Committee met Dec. 5, 2009. During this meeting, the Committee:

  • Observed the presentation of the Consumer Representative Award for Excellence in Consumer Advocacy to Commissioner Mike Kreidler (WA).

  • Received a presentation titled, “Toward Greater Efficiency in Funding Disaster Recovery through Private/Public Insurance,” which called the NAIC to encourage the passage of three proposed bills that would provide federal funding for catastrophe insurance.

  • Received an update of the Federal Privacy Notice Form, which noted that the NAIC has one year to respond to the federally mandated form. The NAIC can either develop a model bulletin that informs insurance companies regarding the way the new federal form is to be used, or the NAIC can replace current regulations with the new federal regulation.

  • Received a review of specific consumer representative requests for NAIC actions and NAIC responses. Discussion focused on whether individual issues presented by consumer representatives were not addressed by the NAIC or if consumer representatives did not agree with the NAIC response to the issues that were raised by the consumer representatives.

  • Received a presentation on the need for, and models of, institutionalized consumer advocacy.

  • Received an update on health insurance and health care issues, including the public option in the federal proposal.
