Insurance Commissioners and the NAIC
As the chief insurance regulatory official, the commissioner, director or superintendent is automatically a voting member of the NAIC. Shortly after taking office, new members receive the New Member Handbook and are invited by the NAIC Executive Vice President/CEO to the NAIC's Kansas City office to view firsthand the range of services and resources available to members and to meet with key NAIC staff members.

The primary means for commissioners to be actively involved in the association is through the NAIC committee system. Each commissioner serves, or delegates to a state insurance department staff member to serve, on various NAIC committees, subcommittees, task forces and working groups. The NAIC Executive Vice President/CEO's office surveys the commissioners each November regarding their preferences for committee memberships for the following calendar year.

NAIC Committee Assignment Process
Around November of each year the Executive Headquarters distributes a membership preference form to each NAIC member for review and to note preferences for the NAIC committees, subcommittee, task forces, and the working groups that report to the Executive Committee. The newly elected President, President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, Past Presidents, and the zone chairs meet in January to make assignments based on the preferences submitted and the requirements established by the Bylaws.

When completing the form it is important to indicate a preference for a position as chair, vice chair, or member of the committee, subcommittee, task force or working group. Additionally, note under comments if there is a strong preference with respect to any of the requests. There may be a few changes made to the list of working groups and task forces based on charges and priorities.

Please note that an information sheet is also a part of the preference form that will need to be completed by members seeking chair or vice chair assignments. Please keep in mind that if a request is made to chair or vice chair a committee, subcommittee, task force or working group, an information sheet will need to be filled out for each request.

A copy of the Charges will be included to assist in making requests for committee assignments. The committee, subcommittee, task force, and working group assignments will be announced shortly before the Commissioners' Conference in February.

The completed committee preference form and interest sheet(s) will need to be submitted via facsimile to the NAIC at a date to be determined.
