New Member Welcome Center

Insurance Commissioners and the NAIC
As the chief insurance regulatory official, the commissioner, director or superintendent is automatically a voting member of the NAIC. Shortly after taking office, new members receive the Member Handbook and are invited to the NAIC's Kansas City office to view firsthand the range of services and resources available to members and to meet with key NAIC staff support. Please contact Trish Schoettger at tschoett@naic.org to request a copy of the Member Handbook.

The primary means for commissioners to be actively involved in the association is through the NAIC committee system. Each commissioner serves or delegates to a state insurance department staff member to serve, on various NAIC committees, subcommittees, task forces and working groups.

NAIC Committee Assignment Process
Each November the NAIC Chief Executive Officer distributes a membership preference form to each NAIC member for review and to note preferences of interest for the NAIC committees, subcommittee, task forces, and the Executive Committee working groups for the following calendar year. The newly-elected President and President-Elect use the preference forms to select chair and vice chairs of committees, subcommittee, and task forces in accordance with the Bylaws. Several factors are considered when making committee assignments, in addition to an individual member’s preferences, among which include a member’s previous participation on a committee, a member’s prior experience or subject matter expertise related to a committee, and a balanced zone representation.

The annual NAIC Commissioners Conference is a vital component of our committee system. The conference provides a forum for reviewing the strategic plan for the coming year and setting goals and priorities for the NAIC. During the conference, the NAIC Executive (EX) Committee reviews the charges assigned to the committees, subcommittee and task forces for the calendar year.
