State Special Data Calls
Special and Customized State Data Requests for Property & Casualty Statistical Requirements

Insurance regulators often have questions about the insurance marketplace that may be answered by reviewing certain compilations of insurance data. The Statistical Handbook of Insurance Data for Regulators contains standard report formats that regulators can use to specify the data they need for some common types of statistical reports. Sometimes, however, regulators need to ask insurers to make special data submissions that provide specific detailed information. These special data submissions are commonly referred to as "special calls."

The NAIC State Special Data Calls web page provides insurers with centralized access to states' specifications for special data calls. It also provides regulators and other interested parties with information and data specifications for special calls that may be routinely requested so that the interested party can design a special data call using the same or a similar format. The ability to make such requests more uniform can significantly reduce the costs to insurers to provide specified data, particularly to more than one entity.

The Insurance Data Management Association (IDMA) provides expertise, information and a rigorous certification program on a variety of data management issues and topics that you may find helpful in dealing with special data calls as well as data management issues in general. The Executive Data Management Information Service and the Insurance Data Management Quarterly are two publications that provide information on data management issues and the activities of IDMA. The NAIC is pleased to post samples of those publications here for your information. Additional information about IDMA can be found at www.idma.org.

State Participation
States that are participating in the NAIC Special Data Call Project link their insurance department's special data call specifications page or home page to the Special Calls By State Map. Information provided on this site may not be a complete list of every call that a state requires. For various reasons, many states are not yet participating in the NAIC Special Calls web page project, so there will not be a link for those states. For example, a state may not make any special data calls, or it may not yet have the specifications for such calls posted on the individual state web site.

Visit the NAIC Store to order the Statistical Handbook of Insurance Data for Regulators.
