Research Department

The Research function at the SVO is organized into two units: (1) Financial & Insurance Market Research Unit ("FIMR") and (2) Investment Research Unit ("IR"). In addition to working together on joint projects, these two units have the flexibility to work on projects independently. The primary focus of the FIMR Unit is: (a) assist state insurance regulators in the insurer solvency monitoring function (b) provide information about, and analysis of, risks that have the potential to affect and/or impair investment cash flows; and (c) be a resource to the Credit Analysis Unit with respect to emerging investment trends, issues and risks. The primary focus of the IR Unit is: (a) supporting the Financial Regulatory Services Division (FRS) in its endeavors to identify potentially troubled insurers to the Financial Analysis Working Group; (b) providing assistance to financial regulators and NAIC financial analysis staff in the form of processes and reports to aid in the detection or evaluation of investment risk; and (c) providing assistance to financial examiners in the form of an investment specialist to support Accreditation requirements relating to the examination process. Each Unit functions under the direction of its own Manager.
