Regulators Advance Global Supervisory Cooperation and Coordination

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 26, 2011) — Members of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) are highlighting regulatory issues related to financial stability and supervision of internationally active insurance groups at the annual International Insurance Forum in Washington, D.C. this week.

"Global coordination between regulators and industry is key to effective international insurance regulation," said Susan E. Voss, NAIC President and Iowa Insurance Commissioner. "This Forum is an opportunity for regulators from points around the world to share effective strategies and discuss the challenges we face in an increasingly complex global arena."

The two-day forum includes more than 130 regulators and insurers from around the world. Panelists from Bermuda, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, Switzerland and the European Commission are discussing strategies to enhance group-wide supervision of internationally active insurance groups, tactics to strengthen regulatory surveillance and perspectives on U.S. solvency regulation.

"U.S. regulators routinely coordinate on effective ways to update and strengthen our regulatory structure in response to changing global financial realities," said Kevin M. McCarty, NAIC President-Elect, Chair of the NAIC International Insurance Relations Committee and Commissioner of the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation. "This Forum is part of our ongoing commitment to such coordination at a global level."
