CALIFORNIA, INDIANA, MAINE, MISSOURI,
NORTH DAKOTA AND
SOUTH CAROLINA TO LEAD MULTI-STATE INSURANCE EXAMINATION OF ANTHEM
WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 27, 2015) - Seven members of the National Association of
Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) will lead the multi-state examination of
Anthem Insurance Companies, Inc. and its affiliates. This examination was
triggered after Anthem reported being a victim of a cybercrime discovered
in late January 2015. The hack may have exposed as many as 80 million past
and current Anthem customers to identity theft.
"While the criminal investigation runs its
course, we will act now to assist and protect consumers," said NAIC
President and Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance Monica
Lindeen. "We'll work to identify those affected, assure that they receive
appropriate protections, and continue our efforts to improve the industry's
The seven lead-state regulators reserve the
right to expand the examination, anticipating that a majority of states and
territories are likely to sign on in the future. NAIC expertise and
resources will support state insurance departments throughout the process.

contacting affected policyholders with specific information regarding
