NAIC Life Insurance Policy Locator Tracks $200 Million for Consumers in Second Year

SAN FRANCISCO (Nov. 15, 2018) — The Life Insurance Policy Locator has matched U.S. consumers with policies totaling more than $200 million in the past 12 months. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) launched the free locator service in November 2016 to make it easier to connect consumers with lost life insurance policies or annuities. In that two-year period, the locator has matched 24,934 consumers with policies, totaling more than $368 million.

"The response we've received to the policy locator in its first two years has been overwhelming," said Julie Mix McPeak, NAIC President and Tennessee Commissioner of Commerce and Insurance. "As state insurance regulators, we want to do everything to make sure companies are keeping their promises to consumers. This tool connects consumers with lost policies and funds they’re owed."

More than 48,000 consumers conducted searches in the past year. Just over 41,000 consumers conducted searches during the service’s first 12 months active.

"Many people don't know where to start when searching for a loved one's life insurance policy, and this service streamlines that process for consumers and insurance companies," McPeak said.

During its first year, the policy locator initially found $92.5 million in lost benefits for consumers. As more matches were made to requests from that year, the first-year total has increased to $166.7 million.
