FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CALIFORNIA, INDIANA, MAINE, MISSOURI,
NEW HAMPSHIRE, NORTH DAKOTA AND
SOUTH CAROLINA TO LEAD MULTI-STATE INSURANCE EXAMINATION OF ANTHEM

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 27, 2015) - Seven members of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) will lead the multi-state examination of Anthem Insurance Companies, Inc. and its affiliates. This examination was triggered after Anthem reported being a victim of a cybercrime discovered in late January 2015. The hack may have exposed as many as 80 million past and current Anthem customers to identity theft.

"While the criminal investigation runs its course, we will act now to assist and protect consumers," said NAIC President and Montana Commissioner of Securities and Insurance Monica Lindeen. "We'll work to identify those affected, assure that they receive appropriate protections, and continue our efforts to improve the industry's cybersecurity."

The seven lead-state regulators reserve the right to expand the examination, anticipating that a majority of states and territories are likely to sign on in the future. NAIC expertise and resources will support state insurance departments throughout the process.

Past and present policyholders are urged to find information provided by Anthem here. Anthem has committed to contacting affected policyholders with specific information regarding protective measures. More information provided by the NAIC regarding the data breach can be found here.
