The Government Relations Leadership Council met Sept. 21, 2009. During this meeting, the Government Relations Leadership Council:

• Received a presentation from Rep. Greg Wren (R-AL) on efforts of the Coalition Organized for the Future of Insurance Regulation (COFIR) in Washington and in the states to defend state regulation of insurance.  Rep. Wren indicated that the threat of federal preemption has never been more real or pressing in Washington, DC. He indicated that COFIR will be lobbying extremely hard at the state and federal level over the next few months and would like to work with state regulators as appropriate.  
• Received the Reinsurance Modernization Proposal from the Reinsurance (E) Task Force and voted unanimously to approve the legislative language for use in Washington, DC. 
• Received an update from Moira Campion (NAIC) on federal activities, including the proposed Consumer Financial Protection Agency, systemic risk regulation, the optional federal charter proposal, and the Office of National Insurance proposal. 
• Received an update from Brian Webb (NAIC) on federal health care reform efforts, including an overview of the Senate Finance Committee draft proposal and efforts to reconcile the various bills pending in the House and Senate.
