Louis D. Savage was appointed Acting Insurance Administrator in November 2011. He oversees a staff of 100; develops policies to protect consumers in all aspects of insurance, including health, life, property/casualty and annuities; and works with stakeholders, legislators and the Governor’s Office on legislative initiatives. He is also a member of the Governor’s health policy team. In addition to overseeing insurance legislation on topics ranging from health and homeowner’s insurance to authorization for Oregon to join the Interstate Insurance Product Regulation Commission (IIPRC), Savage worked closely with the Insurance Division to establish a public hearing process for health insurance rate review. Savage served as senior policy advisor for the Oregon Department of Consumer and Business Services since October 2003. As senior policy advisor, he managed legislative activity for the agency’s six divisions, including the Oregon Insurance Division. Savage began his legal career in 1974 as a staff attorney at Multnomah County Legal Aid, which he later directed. He left Legal Aid to become state director of Oregon Congressman (now Senator) Ron Wyden’s office. Prior to joining the Department of Consumer and Business Services, he was in private practice for 10 years, representing clients in business and consumer litigation before state and federal administrative agencies. Savage is a graduate of Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, OR, and has been a member of the Oregon State Bar since 1974. |
